Amber Fort, Jaipur (Rajasthan) |

|
Nestled on top of a barren ridge, on the outskirts of Jaipur, is the magnificent Amber Fort. The fort is a magnificent blend of the Mughal and Rajput architecture, made of white marbles and red sandstone. Beyond the massive enclosure of the fort are the many splendid palaces, courtyards, gardens, stairways and pillared pavilions that recall the glory and charm of Amber's past. A visit to this majestic site amidst spectacular views over a deep narrow valley and wider plains ahead, on the back of painted elephants is a great experience.
Once the capital of the Mina tribes (believed to be the original inhabitants of the place), this sprawling edifice stands testimony to a land that celebrates an era of great valiance and chivalry. It was Raja Man Singh who laid the foundation stone of the fortress in the year 1592. Later the construction was completed under the leadership of Mirza Raja Jai Singh and Sawai Jai Singh, over a period of about 200 years.
Amber Fort houses the famous Sheesh Mahal, one of the landmark architecture and a favorite tourist delight. The walls of this palace are covered with an array of exquisite mirrors. On the topmost floor of Sheesh Mahal, lies the Jas Mandir with its beautifully carved jali screens and fine mirror and stucco work. At the front courtyard of the fort are the magnificent pillared hall of Diwan-I-Am and the two-tiered painted gateway Ganesh Pol.
One can enter the fort through the beautifully laid Dil e Am Garden, from where, an imposing flight of stairs will lead you to the Diwane -i-Am (audience hall). The temple of Goddess Kali stands to the right of the audience hall. On the higher terrace of the fort complex, beyond the splendid gateway-Ganesh Pol, are the emperors' abodes. These royal apartments are covered with elegant frescoes and intricately designed pavilions.
