Visa Information

Information For Visa Applicants

The Consulate General of India, Hong Kong issues Tourist/Business/ Student/Employment and other types of visas to applicants who are residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. People with Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan ID cards can normally obtain a visa on the same day provided the application is complete in all respects.

Visas can also be issued to applicants who are not normal residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan only after obtaining clearance from the Indian Missions in countries of their normal residence. A time period of 4 to 5 working days is required for processing the request of such applicants. Applicants under this category are required to pay HK$100/- towards telex/fax charges. The visa fee is to be paid after the clearance is received.

All applicants are required to apply in the prescribed application forms along with two passport size photographs and photocopy of pages of passports containing particulars of the applicant.

Types of visas and documents required

Tourist Visa
Applicants are required to submit application form indicating the place(s) of visit and duration of stay.
Business Visa
For the purpose of business in India
Normal duration: 6 months; however, frequent travellers and technicians/experts going to India in pursuance of bilateral agreements or joint venture projects (having the approval of the Government of India) can get long-term business visas valid for up to 5 years with multiple entries.
Supporting documents required: copy of the invitation letter from Indian companies/firms, with which the applicant has business dealings.
Student Visa
For study in India
Normal Duration: same as duration of the course or five years, whichever is less.
Supporting documents required: Proof of admission to the recognized Universities/Institutions in India valid for the duration of the course of study.
Business Visa
Applicants are requested to provide a company letter (from the local company as well as the Indian company) explaining the general purpose of the visit, places to be visited and persons/companies to be contacted.

Journalists and those seeking visas for Research or Filming in India are required to fill in separate forms and provide additional information sought therein. Declaration is also to be filed in respect of equipment being carried. For Research/Filming purpose, a processing time of at least 4 weeks is necessary
Employment Visa
Applicants must provide proper appointment letter from the employer with copies of documents relating to the Company's incorporation in India.
Conference Visa
In some cases a processing time of at least 4 weeks is necessary for grant of visa.
3 months Single Entry Tourist Visa:
can be granted on presentation of a confirmed return air-ticket and proof of sufficient finances to cover all expenditure in India.

Group Tourist Visa for PRC nationals: For group tourist visas (four or more), the application has to be supported by documents from the local tour operator arranging the trip and its Indian counterpart and should contain the detailed itinerary. Applications for tourist visa should be submitted at least 3 days prior to the date of departure.The Tourist visa shall be valid for entry into India by the Visa holder from the day of issue of the visa.

NOTE: Each visa application is considered on its merit and the Consulate General of India, Hong Kong may seek additional information at any stage during the processing of the application. In case where further processing/checks is required to be done, visa will be issued as and when the process is complete. Visa fee once paid is not refundable.

Visitors holding visas valid for more than 180 days are required to register with the Foreigners' Registration Officer within 14 days of their first arrival in India.

GRANT OF VISA TO APPLICANTS HOLDING PEOPLE' S REPUBLIC OF CHINA PASSPORT:

Business Visa
A. Six Months/Multiple Entry: can be granted on a letter of invitation from a "Recognized Indian Organization" i.e. from recognized Chambers of Commerce or industry associations or other trade bodies, public sector undertakings, government-approved joint ventures, liaison offices or private sector companies who are members of a recognized chamber of commerce or industry association or other trade body. Documents required include:

Visa application: 3 copies with 3 passport photographs
Copy of passport and Chinese ID card
Invitation letter from a "Recognized Indian Organization"
Fee: HK$ 315.00
Each stay not to exceed 90 days.

B. Two months/Single entry: can be granted on producing a letter of request from a "duly authorized Chinese organization" i.e. from Ministries and Commissions of the State Council, the Governments of all Provinces, Autonomous Regions and Municipalities directly under the Central Government, Foreign Offices and Bureaus of Economy and Commerce there under, Departments and Units recognized by the Department of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China. Documents required include:

Visa application: 3 copies with 3 passport photographs
Copy of passport and Chinese ID card
Invitation letter from a "Duly authorised Chinese Organisations"
Fee: HK$ 315.00
Employment Visa

A. 3 months Single Entry Employment Visa for opening Representative Office in India
It can be granted on presentation of a letter of approval issued by the Government of India for opening the office with a copy of terms and conditions thereof to Chinese nationals visiting India as Head and Deputy Head of a representative office of a Company or Organization.

B. 3 months Single Entry Employment Visa for employment including for contracted projects:
It can be granted on production of approval letter by the project contacting authority in India, letter of appointment, terms & conditions of appointment, proof of his/her previous employment, short profile of experience/expertise in case of his/her first employment and no criminal record.

Note: Employment visa is issued only after approval from concerned authority in India, which may take 6 to 8 weeks.

C. Single Entry 3 months Entry Visa to Employee's accompanying family members:
It can be granted on presentation of documentary proof of relation with the employee and a sponsorship letter from the employer.

Note: The employees and accompanying family members after their arrival in India shall apply directly to Foreigner's Division, Ministry of Home Affairs for Visa extension, residential permit and multiple entry & exit within 30 days after arrival and 30 days before the expiry of the 3-month period of the initial visa granted.

D. 3 months Single Entry Tourist Visa to non-accompanying spouses/children/relatives of Employees:
It can be granted on production of an invitation letter from the employers.

Note: Tourist visa shall be valid for entry into India by the Visa holder from the day of issue of the visa.

E. 1 month Single Entry Conference Visa:
It can be granted on presentation of an invitation letter from the host organization in India.

Note: Conversion of business visa or any other type of visa into employment visa is not permitted. Chinese nationals desiring to do so must return to their country of permanent residence and apply to the Indian Embassy/Consulate for Employment Visa furnishing all relevant papers required for grant of employment visa.
Student Visa

A. Three Months/ Single Entry Visa for self-financed study
Visa application: 3 copies with 3 passport photographs
Copy of passport and Chinese ID card
Letter of admission from a recognised educational institution in India
Proof of finances to cover to and fro journey and stay in India
Fee: HK$ 315.00

NOTE: Students after arrival in India shall apply directly to Foreigners' Division, Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi for visa extension, grant of residential permit and multiple exit-and-entry facilities within 30 days after arrival and 30 days before the expiry of 3 month period of the initial visa granted.

B. Single Entry visa for the duration of the course under cultural or education exchange programme.

Visa application: 3 copies with 3 passport photographs
Copy of passport and Chinese ID card
Letter of authorisation from the concerned Government body
Fee: as applicable
Tourist Visa

A. Three Months/Single Entry Tourist Visa
Visa application: 3 copies with 3 passport photographs

B. Single Entry Group Tourist Visa
