The cradle of South Indian art and culture 'Chennai' (formerly Madras) is an interesting holiday destination and amongst the most ancient cities of the country. It is the fourth largest metropolis in India that presents a unique blend of traditional and modern style. From the longest beaches to the bustling market areas, the colonial splendors to overwhelming temple architectures, the colorful and vibrant festivals to awe inspiring classical dances, Chennai is the window to the scenic South.
Owing to its proximity to the mighty 'Bay of Bengal', the city enjoys one of the longest beaches in Asia. This port city is also the birthplace of Indian Christianity and the first one to hosts the missionaries from West. Among the most prized remnants of Christianity includes The Basilica of San Thome (where Christ's apostle St. Thomas was burried), the church of St. Thomas Mount (it is the spot where the apostle is said to have died) and the Church of St. Marry (the oldest Anglican church in India). The city also houses other interesting colonial buildings worth visiting.
Chennai also houses some of the well renowned temples of the country. Out of the many old temples of the city- 'the Parthasarthi Temple' (dedicated to Lord Krishna) is a great attraction among tourist. It was built in the 8 th Century and had been renovated by the great Vijayanagara kings during the 16 th Century. Kapaleeswarar Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva) is another major attraction that showcases the architectural skills of the Dravidians during the 13 th century.
