Fleet
On 31 March 2004, there were 363aircraft including 117 aircraft belonging to the regional subsidiaries. It is a young fleet, which is constantly being renewed with latest-generation aircraft such as the Airbus A318, A330-200 and A340-300 or the Boeing B777.
The resounding success of the Paris-CDG2 hub and its forecast development have led Air France to focus its fleet expansion on very long-range aircraft such as the Airbus A340-300, A330-200 and the B777-200. The first two aircraft belong to the Airbus family and are flown by the same pilots and serviced by the same maintenance technicians. These common features enable significant economies of scale to be made.
Similarly, for medium-haul flights, Air France has opted for the A320 Airbus family of aircraft such as the A319, A320 and A321and the A318, the first of which was delivered in October 2003. Air France is the launch airline for this aircraft and the first airline major to operate all four single-aisle short-/medium-haul aircraft built by the European airframer.
These measures will enable Air France to streamline and upgrade its fleet, with the following benefits:
· lower fuel consumption,
· reduced costs
· less pollution.
Nearly three quarters of investments over the next five years have been allocated to upgrading and rationalizing the fleet. Aircraft types will be limited in order to increase profitability and give greater scheduling flexibility. |
